Bookstore Display Shelving: Custom Shop Fitting From the Factory
Books are heavy, and most shelving sold as retail furniture is not built for the load. A single 900 mm bay of hardbacks can weigh more than 120 kg, and when the shelf sags by ten millimetres the whole run looks tired. That is the first thing we design for, before appearance.
We are a factory, not a trading company, so the steel gauge, the shelf thickness and the fixing pattern are decided by the people who will weld and pack the unit.
Load first, then line
Uprights are usually 1.5 mm cold-rolled steel with a 25 mm pitch, and shelves carry a stiffening fold front and back. For full-height runs we add a centre support every 900 mm. The result is a shelf that stays straight with dense stock, which is what a bookstore actually holds.
Face-out and spine-out in the same bay
A bookstore sells covers, not spines. We build bays with a mix of flat shelves and angled display shelves, so new titles face the customer at the entrance while backlist sits spine-out further in. Angled shelves are set at 15 to 20 degrees with a retaining lip so books do not slide when a customer pulls one out.
Display tables that carry the front of store
Front-of-store tables take the impulse decisions. We make them at 750 mm height with a recessed top, a lip on all four sides and castors that lock. A 1200 mm by 800 mm table holds roughly 60 face-up titles and still leaves room for a stack.
Counters and the queue
The counter is where a bookstore either upsells or loses the add-on. We build a 1100 mm working counter with a lower display shelf facing the queue, a lockable drawer for cash, and cable routing for the POS and a card terminal. Height is set at 1000 mm to 1050 mm so staff can stand or use a stool.
Ordering from the factory
Send the floor plan or a measured sketch, the wall lengths you want to fill, and the split between spine-out and face-out shelving. We return a 3D layout, a finish sample and a fixed quotation within two working days. Standard production is 25 to 35 days, and we quote DDP so duty, freight and clearance are included in one number.
Send us four things and the quotation comes back faster: the shelf metres you need, the store plan or dimensions, the delivery city and country, and your opening date.
