A pen is the smallest object on a retail floor and the easiest one to lose a sale on, because a buyer who cannot pick it up will not buy it. The case does the selling before the staff reach the counter.

Cradle the pen, do not stack it

Lay pens in a routed groove so each one sits at the same angle with the clip up, and leave 15 to 20 mm between pens so a customer can pinch one without touching its neighbours. A slope of about 15 degrees lets the barrel catch the light along its full length. Felt or suede reads better than a hard tray and it hides the small scratches that accumulate on a display piece.

Light the barrel, not the room

Pens sell on finish, so the light has to graze the barrel rather than flood the tray. A concealed LED strip under the front lip throws a long highlight down each barrel; keep it at 3000 K to 4000 K and away from the ink so a collector cannot see a colour shift. Glass should be low-iron, because ordinary float glass turns a black barrel green.

Lock the top of the range, show the rest

A pen counter usually carries two tiers: an open tray for the pens customers handle and write with, and a lockable vitrine for limited editions. Ask for a cam lock with a single key per unit, an insert that can be swapped as the range changes, and a removable display deck so the counter can be re-merchandised without a joiner.

Plan the counter as one run

Work the till, the writing pad, the ink drawer and the bagging area into the same run before the case sizes are fixed, and keep 900 mm of clear space behind the counter for a second person. If the pens sit in a shopping centre or an airport, plan for a unit that can be moved in sections.
