A supermarket's front end decides how fast a queue moves and how much the customer grabs on the way. The gondola runs and the checkout counter are where that decision shows its cost.

Size the gondola run to the aisle

Order gondola shelving by bay width, tier heights and the aisle it serves, not by a generic height. A 1200 mm bay with five tiers suits dry grocery, and wider aisles allow endcaps that face both directions. Ask the manufacturer for a bay count against your floor plan so there are no half-bays left at the wall.

Build the checkout counter around the queue

POS counters want a 900 mm working top, a cash drawer bay, and a card terminal plate that sits flush, not bolted on top. Match the finish to the store brand

Powder-coated steel frames in your brand colour, acrylic or laminate tops, and a wipe-clean surface that survives carts and bottles. Specify the top material before the quotation, because laminate, stainless and coated boards carry very different landed prices.

Plan the back of the bay

Shopper-facing gondolas are only half the job. The back tiers feed the front shelves, so they need the same tier heights plus a clear stock zone. A good factory returns a drawing with front and back dimensions separately, along with the fixing points for wall or floor anchor.

Quote landed cost, not invoice cost

Ask the supplier to itemise crating, freight and duty. A gondola run is heavy and long, so seaworthy packaging and a container loading plan protect the shelves from damage before your store even opens. Compare landed cost per bay, not per set, and ask what a replacement shelf or bracket costs after the first year.
